The tortoise wins the race

Will Wan Azizah, who is not good enough to be an MB, be good enough to be the Opposition Leader if Anwar goes away for a long holiday?
COMMENT
azmin kipa300In their train ride through the Selangor MB crisis, Pakatan Rakyat (PR) and PKR have finally arrived at the station called Acceptance, the last of the five stations of grief given in the Kubler-Ross psychiatric model of emotional stages experienced by someone faced with an impending death or break-up of some kind.
The first station was Denial. PKR denied that the palace should accept anyone else but Wan Azizah, preferring to delude itself that the Sultan would waver from his course.
The second was Anger that the Sultan was inclined to do things his own way. Unable to reconcile with the situation, PKR vented its frustrations at the most convenient target, PAS.
The third was Bargaining, with threats of street demonstrations and posturing with discussions about a judicial review, hoping to change the outcome.
The fourth was Depression, when numerous requests for an audience with the Sultan were ignored. PKR began to feel that it might have to eat humble pie.
And now, with grudging Acceptance that the Sultan’s discretion is final, PKR has to prepare for the new reality that Azmin Ali has received the ball from the Sultan.
The wounds have been critical for all stakeholders in this game. No one has emerged unscathed and trust between the PR allies is at an all time low.
PAS has seen deep divisions over the issue, and we may yet see a splinter group exiting the mother party. The rebels who beefed up Wan Azizah’s bid will likely be purged from the party and president Hadi Awang has ensured that PAS doesn’t appear to be a donkey for Anwar Ibrahim to ride to the circus.
Harakah, the PAS mouthpiece, said it was fate that determined who would become the MB. Azmin would now be counted upon to repair the cracks and mend the rift between PAS and PKR.
PKR must now recover the lost trust of the electorate and stop looking for shortcut alternatives to hard work and sound solutions to the rakyat’s problems. Diabolical plots will lead to it’s own undoing.
PKR could have looked more gracious in defeat without the embarrassing excuses and justifications. It’s political bureau should have spared Malaysians months of unrelenting politicking if it was going to accept Azmin anyway.
In a parting slap, Faekah Husin issued a statement that the Selangor Economic Advisor’s office will be shut down permanently to eliminate any unnecessary expense. She thanked Anwar for his contribution as the Economic Advisor to the state, which was commensurate with his official salary of one ringgit.
DAP has been silent on sensing its own impotence. As it turns out, it backed the wrong contender in a contest which was essentially Malay-centric. What else is there left to do but fall into line? To mirror grudgingly PKR’s about face and radically change its own leadership profiles to reflect the demographics of the nation?
But we are talking about politics in the land of endless possibilities. So expect old scores to be stored and even recycled but never thrown away.
So the tortoise wins the race against the lady hare. Will Wan Azizah, who is not good enough to be an MB, be good enough to be the Opposition Leader once again if Anwar goes away for a long holiday? The Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat will fall vacant in the event the Federal Court affirms the Appeal Court’s conviction on the sodomy charge against him.
But Azmin is not out of the woods until he gets the coalition on his side. Otherwise they may be serving tortoise satay at the next session of the State Assembly in November, and the lady hare might be using a Japanese fan to ventilate the flames.
