PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat has insisted that the failure of their by-election candidate Wan Rosdi Wan Ibrahim in Pengkalan Kubor is also Pakatan Rakyat's defeat.
In denying that the defeat was the result of the strained relationship within the coalition following the Selangor menteri besar imbroglio, Nik Aziz said this was because Wan Rosdi's candidacy had been agreed on by all members within the coalition.
"He is not only a PAS candidate but also Pakatan's, what else is there to say," Sinar Harian reported him as saying.
Prior to the announcement of the candidate for the by-election, there was already bad blood between PKR and PAS as both had wanted a chance to fight for the seat against Barisan Nasional.
In the earlier stages, PKR had wanted to contest in Pengkalan Kubor, which was contested by the party in the last two general elections, but PAS was eyeing the seat as it was confident it could recapture the seat they last won in 1999.
After a discussion, PKR decided PAS should contest in the Pengkalan Kubor by-election to avoid further problems.
In the end, BN received an overwhelming victory which took many by surprise as it was expected to be a closer race.
BN’s Mat Razi Mat Ail successfully retained the state seat, posting a stunning victory over Wan Rosdi by a whopping majority of 2,635 votes.
The majority obtained by Mat Razi even surpassed that of his predecessor, the late Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar, who had triumphed over PKR’s Saharun Ibrahim and Independent candidate Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary with a 1,736-vote majority in last year's general election. –TMI
