SHOCK! MARA denies training militants in Langkawi boarding school
KUALA LUMPUR - MARA has denied running militant trainings at a boarding school in Langkawi after pictures of students dressed in a style adopted by Middle Eastern jihadists were posted on Facebook recently.
The government agency set up to aid the Bumiputera community said only a “fraction” of the 450 students in the school programme at MRSM Langkawi were dressed in the black burqa with “support Gaza” headbands that a Malay Mail Online columnist had expressed concern about.
“It is imperative that students, when participating in enrichment programmes such as Independence Day Celebration, United Nation General Assembly and Earth Day, don appropriate clothing based on the themes of the programme.
“This is a far cry from militant activities as depicted by the writer,” MARA said in an emailed statement to Malay Mail Online last night.
“MARA feels the need to instil awareness among its students on humanity, values of independence and willingness to defend the nation. In the reported programme, the students had simply demonstrated their passion and commitment in understanding the issue,” it added.
MARA attached photographs of the event with its statement that showed most of the students in colourful T-shirts and trackpants, holding placards that said “Pray 4 Gaza”.
Malay Mail Online columnist Azrul Mohd Khalib had expressed concern over a Facebook post that showed pictures of female students in garments typical of Islamic State (IS) militants at an event in MRSM Langkawi.
In his column, he questioned the depth of the briefing on the decades-old conflict between Palestine and Israel provided to high school students, and suggested if it might romanticise the militant movements there.
He noted the growing radicalisation of Islam among the youth in Malaysia, pointing out that the police have estimated that more than 100 Malaysians are involved with the IS militants in Syria and Iraq.
