Sabah Umno in no-risk ‘comfort zone’

Jeffrey Kitingan says Sabah Umno leaders must speak up on issues of vital importance to Borneo nations.
sabah putrajayaKOTA KINABALU: Sabah Umno leaders have been accused of remaining in their “comfort zone” while trying to have their cake and eat it too.
That observation on the ruling party in Sabah was made by Bingkor Assemblyman Jeffrey Kitingan who wants them to stand up and be counted on Borneo rights and ‘not continue to be hypocrites”.
“Publicly, they either remain silent or parrot the line taken by Putrajaya on the history of the formation of Malaysia,” said Jeffrey who agrees with PRS President James Masing that those who distort the history on Malaysia should be charged with sedition.
“Privately, they concede what the Opposition has been saying on the true facts behind Malaysia and Borneo rights.”
Jeffrey, who is also the Star Sabah Chief, was joining James in expressing his unhappiness as well on the federal line that Malaysia is 57 years old this year and that Sabah and Sarawak joined the federation as the 12th and 13th states. The true history is that Malaysia is 51 years old this year, and the two Borneo nations helped form the federation in 1963 as equal partners of the peninsular, he argued. “The facts speak for themselves.”
Jeffrey described those parroting the Putrajaya line as “proxies, stooges and rogue elements” of the federal government. “Nationalists are patriots and not secessionists and separatists.”
He hoped that Sabah Umno leaders can look at Sarawak leaders and be shamed into doing the right thing for Sabah instead of contradicting the position taken by the neighbouring state. He urged them to come out of their cocoons and hiding places and tell off Putrajaya in no uncertain terms on the continuing distortions on Borneo rights and on Malaysia.
“They should also speak up against Putrajaya for threatening Sabahans who revisit the formation of Malaysia,” said Jeffrey. “Otherwise, it amounts to treachery and treason when the true facts are being distorted.”
Federal leaders should listen to the grievances and unhappiness of the people in the Borneo nations, stressed Jeffrey, and “correct the true facts of history. They can only do this if Sabah Umno leaders, like Sarawak leaders, part company with Putrajaya on issues of vital importance to the Borneo nations.”
