‘PKR made a MISTAKE by criticising Sultan’ - analyst
KUALA LUMPUR - PKR committed a “terrible” faux pas by accusing the Selangor palace of mistreating party president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, a political analyst said yesterday.
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s Dr Mazlan Ali said the Selangor palace had acted in accordance with the law by appointing Dr Wan Azizah’s deputy Azmin Ali as the new menteri besar.
“Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had acted in a fair and just manner. It is, therefore, unfair for the PKR leadership to issue such a reprimand,” he said.
Mazlan said while the top PKR hierarchy relented to the sultan’s decision, it also displayed disobedience to the palace by expressing its regret over the alleged ill treatment of Dr Wan Azizah.
“PKR’s statement shows that its leaders do not respect the position of the sultan as head of state.
“Even if they are dissatisfied, they should not interpret the state constitution based on their political understanding alone.”
On Monday, the PKR central executive committee issued a statement saying that it regretted the way the Selangor palace had treated Dr Wan Azizah over the appointment of menteri besar issue, claiming that it was against the state constitution.
The PKR leadership said they disagreed with the move by the palace to reject the nomination of Dr Wan Azizah as the new MB, as she had garnered the support of 30 state assemblymen, satisfying the provisions required by the Selangor constitution for her to be appointed to the post.
Instead of issuing such a statement, Mazlan said PKR should have referred the matter to the judiciary as it was in a better position to make proper interpretations of the state constitution.
He said that conventions should be taken into account before making decisions pertaining to the governance and interests of the state, including the appointment of an MB.
Dr Wan Azizah, who was elected Kajang assemblyman in the PKR-engineered Kajang by-election in March, claimed to have the support of 30 of the 56 Selangor lawmakers supporting her candidacy.
Mazlan said he expected PKR to continue dredging up the state constitution issue in the weeks to come.
“However, such a move will only erode PKR’s support among the Malay community.
“Also, questioning the sultan’s decision will only widen the rift between PKR and Pas,” he said, adding that such a scenario would further weaken Pakatan.
In a statement on Monday, Dr Wan Azizah said she was of the opinion that Azmin’s appointment was not done in accordance with the state constitution.
“Even though I believed that this nomination had not adhered to the state constitution, I believe the
focus needs to be returned to care for the people of Selangor.” -NST
