PASMA TO REPLACE PAS IN PAKATAN RAKYAT?

Plans to replace Pas with a new political party in Pakatan Rakyat are silently brewing in order to keep the opposition pact intact.
Parti Ummah Sejahtera Malaysia (PasMa), a movement formed by Pas supporters themselves, is ready to throw their support behind PKR and DAP if Pas decides to leave the coalition.
PasMa officials claim that Pas leadership was leaning towards forming a unity government with Umno. They are also unhappy that Pas ignored its allies by naming more than one candidate as the next Selangor Menteri Besar.
Both PKR and DAP had insisted only PKR President Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was named as the candidate.
“The indication is there and is solid. Pas did not reach a common stand with PKR and DAP so we have to be ready. The question is why didn’t Pas stick to a joint decision?” said one of PasMa protem committee member Che Ibrahim Mohamed.
Despite calls by its allies to push Dr Wan Azizah as the sole candidate, Pas had named PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali and one of its own state executive councilors as the next MB.  It did not reveal the name of the third candidate.
Another latest development suggests that Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang may have proposed three of the party’s four Selangor Exco members as candidates for the MB’s post.
Pas’ move has caused unease among Pakatan allies but the Islamist party maintained that it was only obeying the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s decree.
The Sultan had ordered the parties to send more than two names by Sept 3.
Che Ibrahim said PasMa was formed in light of the recent Selangor fiasco, as they were concerned with Pas’ future in Pakatan. He said the main intention of forming PasMa was to strengthen Pas’ position in PR and to ensure it sticks with the coalition.
The group was registered last month as a non-governmental organisation. PasMa held its first meeting on Merdeka Day in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, and is going around the country to round up support. To-date it has more than 100 supporters.
It was learnt that Pas central committee member Dr Hatta Ramli was present during the Aug 31 meeting to show his support to PasMa.
The next forum by the group is expected to feature Pas vice-president Datuk Husam Musa, central committee member Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa and former Shura council member Ahmad Awang as speakers. The forum is to be held on Sept 8 at the Chinese Assembly Hall in Kg Attap.
“Pakatan is the best vehicle to carry us forward. I am sure we will receive good feedback from the grassroots because many of us do not want Pas to be with Umno,” said Che Ibrahim, who is former Kolej Islam Sultan Yahya Petra deputy registrar and widely known as the right hand-man of Husam.
PasMa protem president Datuk Ir Phahrolrazi Zawawi, who is Kedah Pas Deputy Commissioner 1, however denied that PasMa wanted to replace Pas.
“We are here to open up space to discuss critical issues. Our focus is more towards celebrating opinions and debates, not an aggressive one.”
He also dismissed allegations that the group planned to engage cyber troopers in social media to attack the Ulama faction in Pas, as well as to downgrade the image and conduct open criticism against Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.
A post in www.tranungkite.net yesterday alleged that PasMa was formed to fire up rumours on Pas’ intention to collaborate with Umno as well as to attack the conservative group in Pas, among others.
When pressed on the main reason PasMa was formed, Phahrolrazi said it was because Pas could not reach a consensus in Pakatan in the recent developments in Selangor.
“Pas has distressed the bonding in PR,” he added.
Another PasMa committee member Muhammad Husin, who is former Pasir Puteh Member of Parliament, said the Selangor issue has called for a back-up plan to convince Pas and its supporters to remain in Pakatan.
