PAS president overstepped his boundaries, says party legal bureau

PAS Legal and Human Rights Bureau secretary Abang Ahmad Kardee Abang Masagus said party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang should not have taken matters into his own hands.
"There are no provisions in the party's constitution for the president to make decisions on his own without meeting with the central committee," Abang said in a statement today.
"It is clearly stated in the party constitution that the president, deputy president, vice-presidents and secretary-general must discuss issues with the central committee."
Abang was referring to Hadi's decision to unilaterally nominate candidates for the Selangor Menteri Besar, which has been a long-standing saga for the past several weeks.
Following the uproar caused by his decision, Hadi maintained he had used the discretion accorded to him by the party’s constitution to submit the three names for the Selangor menteri besar position to the palace.
“In PAS, we have always operated according to the constitution,” Hadi told a special briefing for party members and leaders in Terengganu yesterday.
“PAS’ constitution states the president has the right to decide on matters closely tied to the party. And its members, deputy and vice-presidents must abide by the president’s decision,” he had said earlier, rebutting criticism of his decision.
Abang Ahmad said the bureau had decided to clear the air for the long-term good of the party.
“If we commit this bad precedent, it will result in chaos in the party and the party will lose its integrity as a principled and disciplined party,” he said.
He stressed that the bureau was not belittling the high position of the Syura council in PAS.
“But as a bureau responsible for legal issues, it is our responsibility to give an opinion or criticism against something which violates the constitution which we have agreed upon,” he said.
