Najib copying Dr M's despotic style - Anwar flays Sedition charge on lawyer as bid to upset sodomy defence
PKR de-facto leader Anwar Ibrahim has questioned the validity of the sedition charge against his lawyer N Surendran for merely stating the opposition leader's legal defence.
Surendran, said Anwar, had merely repeated the Permatang Pauh MP's statements in the latter's testimony from the dock.
"Now words uttered by my lawyer in my defence are now the basis of criminal prosecution against him. This is persecution.
"It is clearly to intimidate my legal team and obstruct them from carrying their professional duties and effectively violates my constitutional right to a proper legal representation.
"My appeal will be compromised and this is grossly unfair from the very beginning," he said in a statement.
The opposition leader said Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is learning from his mentor former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The long-serving PM had utilised all the state's resources when he was first charged for sodomy in 1998, said Anwar, which succeeded in getting him convicted of offences that he had never committed.
"Najib is doing the same thing as his mentor did, which is to employ all means within his power through the media, the police, the attorney-general and the judiciary in order to subvert the course of justice and to take me out of the political equation."
'Seditious' words meant for court
Surendran was charged with separate counts of sedition on Aug 19 and Oct 28.
His first charge was for issuing a press statement in April claiming that Anwar’s Sodomy II charge is false, while his second charge was for a YouTube video of him blaming Najib for the charges against Anwar.
Lawyer Eric Paulsen representing Surendran had voiced concerns similar to Anwar’s regarding the charges.
“Whatever he is saying now is in line with Anwar’s defence, which have been taken up in the High Court and in the Court of Appeal...
“In the Federal Court, when the matter comes up, he will still be arguing the same thing.
"Slapping the two sedition charges, is for us, a clear-cut case of targeting the lawyers who are representing Anwar Ibrahim,” he told Malaysiakini after Surendran was slapped with his second charge.
Anwar’s appeal at the Federal Court over his Sodomy 2 case is due to be heard on Oct 28 and 29. -M'kini
