The Education Ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Madinah Mohamad clarified that Examinations Syndicate director Dr Na'imah Ishak and the deputy director of operations Dr Wan Ilias Wan Salleh had not been suspended from duty, saying "they are not being punished".
“They have not been suspended. They have been assigned other duties unrelated to the Examinations Syndicate to enable the independent committee to carry out its investigations," Bernama quoted Madinah as saying in a press conference in Putrajaya.
Muhyiddin said that the two civil servants should be held responsible for having tarnished the image of the ministry and that of public examinations.
"Dr Na'imah has to be responsible because the UPSR leaks have compromised the integrity of public examinations and the Ministry," Muhyiddin was quoted as saying in a tweet by Bernama on the same day.
The deputy prime minister made the announcement shortly after returning from a working trip to Vientiane, Laos.
Meanwhile, Madinah said that the Education Ministry will take disciplinary action against all the teachers responsible for the leak of the English and Science papers in this year's UPSR examinations.
She added that if any of the teachers are charged in court, they would be temporarily suspended from service with a 50% salary cut.
"If they are convicted and sentenced, we will proceed with the disciplinary process under the Public Officers Regulations (Conduct and Discipline)," Bernama quoted Madinah as saying.
She was asked on the action to be taken against the teachers now under remand following the UPSR exam leakes two weeks ago.
Close to 500,000 UPSR students will be sitting for their Science and English papers on September 30.
The students had not sat for their original Science papers on September 11 after the leak was discovered, however, the ministry did not halt the sitting of the English papers on the same day, hence a resit is required.
As of last night, 14 individuals have been detained including 12 teachers, an insurance agent and an engineer.
According to Bernama, 22 individuals have been called to give their statements, including six officers of the Examinations Syndicate, 13 teachers, a journalist, an insurance agent and an engineer.
