Embassy fails Malaysian detained in Russian airport for days

A local student says he got no aid from Malaysian embassy but foreign ministry says otherwise.
Screen shot 2014-09-11 at 8.30.50 AMKUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian student M Murugan Pillai who was denied entry to Russia at the Domodevo International Airport has claimed that despite attempts to seek help from the Malaysian embassy in Moscow, no aid arrived since the day he was detained on Sept 2 to his departure back to Malaysia on Sept 8.
He also claimed he was given only one meal per day.
However according to Malaysian embassy officials in Moscow, they did try to gain access to the student but were not given permission until he was deported.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said Russian authorities did not specify the reason to refuse entry to Murugan, and that the deportation was delayed as there was no vacant seat available back to Malaysia.
It said the student at the Russian National Research Medical University was denied entry on Sept 2, held at the airport and subsequently deported on Sept 7 before arriving at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Sept 8.
The statement said the embassy was not officially notified of this matter but that upon receiving the news, tried to gain access to him at the airport.
“As he was not charged, officials from the Malaysian embassy could not get access to him but were able to communicate with Russian authorities,” the ministry said.
It said embassy officials worked closely with Russian authorities to ensure the student’s rights were looked after.
“In fact, meals were served three times a day while he waited for the next available flight to Malaysia,” it said.
The statement further said the Russian Border Control Department issued an order to Murugan stating that ‘According to part 8 article 26 of Federal Law dated 15 August 1996 No. 114 – FZ, he is not allowed to enter the Russian Federation until 02.07.2016.’
“It’s an international practice that every country has the right to deny entry to anybody into its territory,” it added.
