DAP: Top scorers still left out from med school

Teresa Kok says increasing 100 places for medical students in public varsities does not explain why current quotas remain unfulfilled.
teresakokKUALA LUMPUR: Seputeh MP Teresa Kok has asked why public universities have failed to fill their quota of 1,550 places, leaving many top scorers without places to study medicine.
She said these statistics were revealed by the Malaysian Medical Council.
The national vice-chairperson of DAP also poked holes in minister Wee Ka Siong’s statement that there would be an additional intake of 100 medical students, bringing this year’s total intake to 1,019 students.
She said, “The first question that comes to mind is why has the cabinet not decided to ask the 11 public universities to fill up the approved quota of 1,550 places?”
Kok added that increasing 100 places this year would still mean a “real decrease” in intake of medical students.
Kok also wanted to know if last year’s overall intake was more or less than 1,019 since Wee did not reveal the actual figure.
“The government must practice transparency and accountability and reveal whether there is a reduction in this year’s overall intake of medical students, if so, why?” Kok insisted.
She also said Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin must explain why public universities were not instructed to fill the approved quotas, leaving top scorers without the opportunity to pursue medical programmes.
She said the increase of 100 places for medicine was obviously still insufficient.
