But was Iszuree telling the truth? Pas slams Penang council for rep's suspension
GEORGE TOWN - STATE Pas Youth chief Mohd Yusni Mat Piah has slammed the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) for removing the party’s representative, Iszuree Ibrahim, from the council’s Permanent Committees and freezing all his allocations.
Yusni said the action taken against Iszuree, who is the state Pas treasurer, was unfair, undemocratic and hasty.
“Iszuree has a good track record and his appointment was recommended by the state Pas. By right, any decision to suspend must be made after consulting Pas. This high-handed approach is akin to opening old wounds, which have just started to heal.”
Iszuree was informed of his suspension via a letter dated Sept 26, signed by MPPP council secretary, Ang Aing Thye.
According to the letter, made available on social networking sites, the decision to drop Iszuree was made during a state executive council meeting on Thursday.
The letter, which does not specify the reason for the suspension, also states a freeze on Iszuree’s allocation as a municipal councillor.
In a Facebook posting yesterday Iszuree wrote: “Kebebasan suara telah mati di Pulau Pinang, apa guna Speakers Corner di Padang Kota.” (Freedom of speech has died in Penang, what is the use of the Speakers Corner at the Esplanade).
Iszuree had earlier fallen out of favour with Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng for criticising the state government’s policy on development projects involving land occupied by squatters.
It was reported that Iszuree had called on the state government to introduce measures to protect the rights of squatters who were forced out of their homes to make way for development.
He had said the state government was using a policy set by the previous state government, which did not fully protect the rights of the squatters.
On Thursday, Lim had accused Iszuree of lying for saying that the DAP-led state government had inherited a policy involving squatters from the previous Barisan Nasional administration.
Lim said the state’’s current policy on the matter was new, adding that those who claimed otherwise were not telling the truth.
Lim refused to comment on Iszuree’s suspension. -NST
