BN picks Mat Razi for P Kubor by-election

BN picks Mat Razi for P Kubor by-election
TUMPAT - Ustaz Mat Razi Mat Ail Ail, former Tumpat assistant education officer, is the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Pengkalan Kubor state by-election on Sept 25.
Deputy Prime Minister and BN deputy chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin made the announcement here today.
He said the BN chose Mat Razi, 48, who is a member of the Tumpat Umno Committee, as he was a local who had much experience and had been of service to the constituents.
"He is a local of Pengkalan Kubor and has a BA Hons degree specialising in Bahasa Melayu and History.
"Ustaz Mat Razi is also the founder of a pondok (religious school) in Tumpat and we feel he is close to the people," Muhyiddin said when announcing the candidate before more than 5,000 people at the BN operations centre for the by-election here.
Muhyiddin's wife Puan Sri Norainee Abdul Rahman; BN secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor; Kelantan BN chairman Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed and Tumpat Umno acting head Datuk Mohd Rosdi Ab Aziz were also present.
Muhyiddin said Prime Minister and BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak made the decision on the choice of candidate today.
"All the nominees were subjected to strict vetting, even from the legal point, and the party (Umno) president picked Ustaz Mat Razi," he said.
He explained that Mat Razi was picked based on consultation and not arbitrarily.
"The candidate must be someone who is not only of good character but also good in holding office," he said.
Muhyiddin also announced that Mustapa would be the BN's director for the by-election and expressed the hope that all quarters would extend their cooperation to the international trade and industry minister.
The by-election has been necessitated by the death of three-term assemblyman Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar of the BN on Aug 20. Nomination is on Saturday and polling on Sept 25.
Muhyiddin said Noor Zahidi had taken care of the constituents well and had resolved most of their problems, and what the BN had to do was to continue the good work of the late assemblyman.
He also said that all quarters in the BN should ensure unity at all levels so as to retain the seat.
He said he would visit the constituency several times during the election campaign to give inspiration to the BN election workers and the voters to ensure that the coalition kept the seat. – Bernama
