Beneficiaries of Selangor deals under Khalid to be exposed, says Anwar

The beneficiaries of various major deals struck by former Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, before his tenure ended last week, will be exposed, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The PKR de facto leader said the Selangor administration under newly minted Menteri Besar Azmin Ali is expected to review and highlight “huge approvals and contracts” done under the previous administration.
These include the water deal signed by Khalid with the federal government, involving the treatment and distribution operations in the RM30 billion industry, the building of the RM3.6 million Langat 2 water treatment plant and the RM2.42 billion Kinrara-Damansara Expressway (Kidex).
“But in reality, hundreds of millions in benefits will be gained by certain people who are in high places,” he said.
Anwar described them as “cronies” whom the people were asked to support. He said the people were told that as Malays they were supposed to “follow rules”.
Anwar said the water deal would impact water rates charged to the public.
“Politically, when it comes to the issue of public interest, my concern is it has direct bearing on the water rates,” he said after launching a campaign to abolish the Sedition Act organised by PKR in Seberang Jaya, Penang, last night.
He said the “exorbitant profit or interest” from the deal would eventually burden the people.
He said he was “quite aware” of the beneficiaries involved after doing his own checks and “homework”, and not because he was informed by Khalid.
“And I realised why some people are bent on defending (the deals) and refusing to reason. It’s partly because of this huge interest at stake,” he said, adding that the former MB's debt settlement with Bank Islam through former Umno lawyer Tan Sri Rashid Manaf was also a cause for concern.
He said it did not matter which party gained from the deals, even if they are from PKR or other component parties.
“It does not matter... We promise to be transparent,” he said.
Anwar stressed that Azmin, who is also PKR deputy president, and his team in the state government will have to look over the deals first.
He expressed confidence that Azmin would make good his promise of good governance and transparency, and deliver on the “shift from the corporate way of governing to concern and care for the people.”
He added that Azmin’s administration has also been asked to review the pay hikes for the MB and executive council members, as well as to look into reducing assessment rates in the state following increments under Khalid since 2008.
Anwar said he will continue explaining to the people the issues that necessitated Khalid’s removal, but declined to comment on the Selangor Sultan’s apparent admonishing of PKR in his speech on Friday.
“I am not commenting specifically to Tuanku’s remarks or speech,” he added.
“But it is a duty for citizens to understand the spirit of Merdeka, constitutional provisions and what is basically our criticism of the country’s administration.”
Asked on the closure of the office of state economic advisor, which Anwar held on the last day of Khalid’s tenure, Anwar said he or his staff had not received the termination letters.
“So there was no official notice as far as I am concerned.” he said.
