Azmin Ali to replace Khalid Ibrahim

PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali is the next Selangor menteri besar (MB), according to sources close to him.
A source close to the Gombak MP said an announcement will be made by the Selangor palace today.
“An official announcement will be made soon. Just be patient,” the source told The Malaysian Insider today as speculation raged in the state as to who will replace Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim tomorrow.
The Star Online reported that Azmin is currently in the midst of discussions with PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and party president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who was the party’s choice of MB all along.
He had earlier said he would not assume the position as long as the party wanted its president to replace Khalid.
Over the last few weeks, the party had repeatedly said it was sticking to its stand of nominating only Dr Wan Azizah, despite several reprimands from the Selangor palace over its decision to send only one name.
DAP and PKR had submitted only Dr Wan Azizah's name for the post, although DAP was open to the idea of Azmin to replace Khalid.
PAS, however, broke ranks with its partners when its president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang sent three names to the palace. The three are said to be Dr Idris Ahmad (PKR-Ijok), Dr Yakub Sapari (PKR-Kota Anggerik) and Iskandar Samad, the Selangor PAS commissioner, who is also a state exco member and Cempaka assemblyman.
It is not known if PKR and DAP submitted more names following a reprimand by the Sultan of Selangor, who had asked each Pakatan Rakyat (PR) party to submit more than two names.
Last week, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah reportedly interviewed and shortlisted three candidates for the job.
Apart from Azmin, he had also interviewed PAS state assemblymen Iskandar Samad and Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi, despite the Islamist party stating it would not stake a claim for the position.
PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli last week told The Malaysian Insider that if Dr Wan Azizah was not appointed as MB, the party would convene a meeting with PAS and DAP, as well as the 29 other Selangor assemblymen who had signed statutory declarations in support of her.
"We have to make a decision together once we have confirmation who is the next MB," he told The Malaysian Insider, adding that whoever the Sultan appointed should be according to procedures in the state constitution.
