WHY & IN RETURN FOR WHAT? Umno lawyer helped Khalid settle RM67 MIL Bank Islam loan - PKR

WHY & IN RETURN FOR WHAT? Umno lawyer helped Khalid settle RM67 MIL Bk Islam loan - PKR
The person behind the settlement of Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim's RM66.67 million debt with Bank Islam is former Umno lawyer Tan Sri Rashid Manaf, PKR revealed today.
This was mentioned following the release of a report describing six reasons PKR wants Khalid to quit his post as menteri besar of Malaysia's wealthiest state.
The 24-page report was distributed to Pakatan Rakyat pact's top leaders who, among others, included PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang and secretary-general Lim Guan Eng today.
"It was Khalid's own political secretary who admitted that the MB had met with Rashid to discuss ways to settle his debt," the report said.
Further reasonable doubts pointing towards Khalid's integrity being compromised was when Bank Islam decided to drop the loan settlement suit and settle the case out of court.
The report further said that in March, a month after Bank Islam dropped the suit, business deals involving projects and properties worth hundreds of millions of ringgit were signed between the Selangor state government and Eco World Berhad, a company controlled by Rashid.
The report stated that Rashid was a corporate figure with close ties with Umno and Barisan Nasional and also the ex-lawyer of former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin.
The report also claimed Khalid was unable to provide logical explanation for his loan settlement during a meeting with the party leadership on March 6, which raised further doubts of the MB's integrity.
Khalid's explanation, the report said, was not convincing when he was said to have claimed to be able to win RM300 million if action was taken against Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB).
The report said Khalid had promised Bank Islam to take action against PNB.
"It was illogical and does not make sense. His explanation was not accepted by the PKR leadership because he could not explain why he was given special treatment by the bank despite winning many cases against him prior to this," the report said.
If his claim were true, the report said Khalid has yet to initiate any action against PNB as promised.
"It's been five months now since the meet and Khalid has yet to take action," added the report.
Khalid, a former corporate captain, became MB six years ago when PKR and its allies scored a shock win over Barisan Nasional (BN) in the 2008 general election.
Early this year, PKR initiated the'Kajang move' to replace Khalid with Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail after complaints against the two-term MB for running the state unilaterally without consulting party leaders, as well as the Pakatan leadership.
These include his handling of issues, such as water rationing, the Selangor Islamic Religious Department's seizure of Malay and Iban Bibles, as well as Khalid's push for the Kinrara-Damansara Expressway (Kidex), which had upset some Pakatan leaders as it went against the pact's election manifesto to abolish tolled highways.
Khalid has resisted all attempts to remove him, and said he would remain as MB until his term ends. -TMI
