KUALA LUMPUR - Expressing disappointment that it has been targeted by boycott action, McDonald's Malaysia says it does not channel any sales, profits or franchise fees from its restaurants to support any political cause or conflict in any part of the world.
"While we understand and respect that the act of boycotting is an individual decision, nevertheless we are disappointed that McDonald's Malaysia has been unfairly targeted," it said in a statement today.
It pointed out that some of its restaurants had been subjected to acts of vandalism to the extent that it had no choice but to shut down operations for the day.
"The reality is that our employees and franchisees have done nothing wrong, and it's grossly unfair that they should be targeted in such a away," it said in a statement today.
It was reported that supporters of Palestine had taken to social media platforms urging for a 24-hour boycott of the fast-food chain today against the backdrop of the Israeli military offensive in Gaza which had killed nearly 2,000 people.
McDonald's Malaysia reiterated that it did not support nor condone the current conflict in the Middle East and that like other Malaysians, its utmost sympathy went out to the innocent victims in Gaza.
The firm noted that it had been consistent and transparent in communicating its position but the information that it shared had been misinterpreted by certain parties.
"Let's remind ourselves that we're Malaysians and we share a common bond. We can agree to disagree respectfully.
"But most importantly, let's continue to pray for an end to the conflict in Gaza and for continued peace there," it added. - BERNAMA
