SERIOUS LACK OF CREDIBILITY: M'sian cops now say probing teen for liking Israel was 'misunderstanding'

SERIOUS LACK OF CREDIBILITY: M'sian cops now say probing teen for liking Israel was 'misunderstanding'
A Malaysian teenager has been probed by local authorities for ‘liking’ a Facebook page that proclaimed ‘I Love Israel.’
Police chief Abdul Rahim Hanafi said Wednesday that a sedition probe was underway and that while being questioned, the student said that his ‘liking’ the page was an accident.
But lawyers questioned why police were probing the teen for simply ‘liking’ the post, claiming no crime was committed. “I can’t see ‘liking’ the Facebook page as evidence of an action of seditious nature,” said human rights activist and lawyer Andrew Khoo. He added that some may have been offended, but ‘liking’ the page wasn’t directed at any person and wasn’t intended to incite any action.
And facing tough backlash, police have now said that the whole incident was a misunderstanding, But police added that they are still investigating the ‘whole case’ including death threats that were made to the teenager, who has not been identified.
“We are not investigating the boy for sedition, just the case,” a police chief said, adding that initial investigations showed the whole incident was just caused by a misunderstanding.
If found guilty for sedition — which incites people to be hostile against another group — the teen could’ve faced up to three years in prison.
The teens teacher has allegedly posted the incident on her own page, which caused incited threats towards him.
The director of the Penang Education Department, Osman Hussain, said he was considering transferring the teacher to a different school.
“Let this also be a warning to all teachers in Penang not to go to Facebook and post rants against their students there,” he told The Malay Mail Online. “We are living in Malaysia, so we must have mutual respect for each other despite our differences so the students also should be made aware of this,” he said. -http://jpupdates.com
