Selangor gov’t prays for rain as dam levels worsen

The Selangor government will hold special prayers to seek divine intervention as water levels at the state's dams continue to drop.

According to Selangor executive councillor in charge Ahmad Yunus Hadri, water levels at the five out of seven dams which supply water to the Klang Valley are down 0.55 to 2.83 percent compared to Aug 7.

Only the Sungai Selangor dam, which supplies most of water to consumers, saw an improvement to 0.13 percent, while the Batu dam is unchanged.

“The state government, through the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department, will hold a solat istisqa’ to ask for rain at the water catchment areas in the near future,” he said in statement late yesterday.

He said that the state has also engaged in cloud seeding twice a week since Aug 1 at the Sungai Selangor dam area.

The area received 181.65mm of rain since Aug 1, comparatively higher than rainfall in June and July.

The state will also reduce the levels released from the same dam from 700 to 500 litres a day.

“This, followed by rainfall from the cloud seeding exercise as well as supply from the alternative ponds of up to 800 litres a day can help extend the supply of raw water at the dams until the east coast monsoon expected in October,” he said.

In a related development, Yunus said reports of another sabotage attempt at the pumping station last Monday were unfounded.

He said the pumping stations are now secure with the help of police and People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) personnel.
