Paper: Nudists may have frolicked in front of surau

The Penang Nudist Sports Games 2014, which has created a stir and prompted police investigations, may have been carried out in front of a surau, Sinar Harian reported today.

The paper sent its own reporters to scout out Teluk Bahang, where the illegal activity allegedly happened, and deduced from the video that it happened at Teluk Kampi.

Although no national park guards wanted to talk about it, its reporters were even sure that  at least one of the activities was carried out in front of the Muslim place of worship, Sinar Hariansaid.

“What’s truly disgusting is that the participants of an event where they painted their naked bodies, took place in front of the Teluk Kampi surau,” the paper reported.

The video of the nudist event, claimed to be Malaysia’s first, was siphoned from a blog by a participant. It was then publicised by Umno blogs, who used it to point to the DAP-led Penang state government’s alleged wrongdoing.

Among the alleged activities shown in the video, which is circulating on the Internet, include nude body painting, a Gangnam-style horse dance, crab walking and a campfire.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has however said the statewould never approve something so wrong as a nudist beach camp.

Sinar Harian reporters however failed to elicit more details from the guardians of the national park, who remained tight-lipped apart from commenting that “there were many incidents”.

A tour facilitator, who declined to be named, however said that Teluk Kampi was an isolated spot but accessible by boat.

“Most people come here for camping activities because of the calmer sea compared to Monkey Beach about 5km away,” he was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, Berita Harian reported that Penang police chief Abdul Rahim Hanafi had confirmed that police had received the alleged lewd video and was investigating the incident.

Abdul Rahim said the the nudists would be investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which punishes anyone who “uses word or gestures intended to insult the modesty of a person”.

Those found guilty of the offence can be jailed up to five years and fined.
