PETALING JAYA - Netizens are up in arms over a government plan to study the possibility of banning popular social networking site Facebook.
They labelled the proposal shortsighted, idiotic and silly among other things.
Facebook user Felicia Ernestine Sylvester questioned the rationale behind the suggestion.
"Apa salah Facebook? (What did Facebook do wrong?) Block the users who misuse it. Propaganda can be spread using any media," she said.
Another user, Chong Li Herng sarcastically commented that the highways should also be closed down as it contributes to accidents and deaths,
Kamarul A Muhamed also shared similar sentiments with Chong.
"While you are at it, consider banning cars, bikes, buses etc - plenty of "abuse" causing thousands of death every year. What an absurd idea," he said.
Facebook is banned in countries such as North Korea and Iran while China, Egypt and Pakistan have previously banned the social networking site, although the bans did not last.
Many users also pointed out that Facebook is a platform used by many not only to share their thoughts and ideas, but also to stay connected with friends and family, conduct businesses and disseminate important information fast and effectively.
Sheela Palanisamay said "Facebook has made long time friends meet after number of years, friends and family keep in touch especially those who live far away in different country. You are depriving people of free communication if FB is closed down."
Kasturi Karthiben Muthu pointed out that there were unintelligent people everywhere, not only on Facebook.
"No point here to block Facebook to stop all the nuisance! Better to stop racism and start to respect each other. "Don't try to close one and open the new one "! Be practical folks!" she said.
On Friday, Bernama reported that the government will be studying the possibility of shutting down Facebook as there have been many cases of misuse.
Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek reportedly said that the government would be gathering feedback from the public, as the action would be quite radical.
He said that the 2,000 reports against Facebook postings received by the ministry was small compared to the number of users in Malaysia, which is estimated to be about 15 million. -Asiaone
