Minister snips HSBC card in Gaza protest

Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Ismail Sabri today cut his HSBC credit card in half in a show of protest against the global bank's move to close the accounts of pro-Palestine organisations.

Uploading a picture of him doing so on social media, Ismail also showed a letter dated tomorrow instructing HSBC to cancel the credit card immediately.

"(I am) protesting HSBC's decision to close the accounts of pro-Palestine organisations.

"I always support the struggle of the Palestinians who are oppressed by Israel," Ismail (below) wrote on his Instagram account.

The post received support from more than 400 Instagram users.

HSBC, the world second largest bank, last month shut down the accounts of three Muslim organisations in the UK, saying that the account holders' activities fell "outside (the bank's) risk appetite".

The organisations are London's Finsbury Park mosque, Ummah Welfare Trust (UWT) and the Cordoba Foundation thinktank, dailyThe Guardian reported.

Cordoba Foundation chief executive Anas Atikriti was quoted as saying that HSBC also sent his family members, including his children aged 12 and 16, the same notice over their personal bank accounts.

"The only explanation that comes to mind is my work for Palestine and Gaza," he is quoted as saying.

HSBC, however, told The Guardian that it does not discriminate customers on grounds of religion or race.

The news has gone viral among Malaysian social media users with many vowing to shut down their HSBC accounts, including Islamic banking service HSBC Amanah.

The death toll in the Gaza Strip has reached more than 1800, mostly civilian Palestinians including women and children, almost a month since the latest Israel-Palestine conflict sparked.
