Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in a statement said Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, who led a 21-strong police contingent to the MH17 crash site had successfully arrived at the crash site this morning, but were not allowed to enter the area to start the search operations.
Zahid said artillery bombardment between the Ukrainian military and pro-Russian rebels in the surrounding area had hampered the team's plan to begin the procedure of gathering evidence.
"The Malaysian team have been forced to take cover in nearby locations, including the roadside until the situation stabilises," Zahid said.
The minister said the police contingent were given a heavily-armed escort during their journey to the crash site.
"Evidence of heavy fighting between pro-Russian rebels and Ukrainian forces were evident in the surrounding areas in the vicinity of the site," Zahid added.
Investigations into the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 has been a painstaking process due to the fierce fighting between the two warring parties.
The international probe inched forward last Thursday as experts risked attack to reach the site for the first time in nearly a week after Kiev announced a halt to its military offensive.
A small team of Dutch and Australian experts accompanied by international monitors accessed the vast crash site of flight MH17.
Dutch police heading up the international probe said the situation around the crash site remained perilous despite the small team managing to access the scene.
"The security situation is still very unstable," Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg, head of the mission to repatriate the remains of the victims, said.
"We are not absolutely sure if we can reach the crash site with the whole team of experts in the near future, but we are more hopeful than we were before," he said.
United Nation's secretary-general Ban Ki-Moon had appealed to both sides to halt fighting around the crash site.
The remains of some of the 298 victims of MH17 are still lying in the sun some two weeks after the commercial airliner was struck by a surface-to-air missile over eastern Ukraine.
Kiev has repeatedly blamed pro-Russian rebels controlling the site for blocking the probe and warned that insurgents were still shelling its troop positions across the region.
The rebels responded by accusing Ukraine of not sticking to the truce.
MAS flight MH17 departed from Amsterdam on July 17 with 15 crew members and 283 passengers, and crashed in the Donetsk region, about 50km from the Russian border.
