Dr M’s right to slam Najib, says Isma

Muslim right-wing group Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) today agreed with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's outburst against the prime minister, saying that Datuk Seri Najib Razak had been slow in solving the nation's woes.
Isma president Abdullah Zaik Abdul Rahman said numerous problems currently experienced plaguing Malaysia were because of Najib's lack of action which, in turn, nurtured discontentment among the people.
"Dr Mahathir is signalling to Najib to be on his toes, to be sharper. Maybe Dr Mahathir is voicing out the views of the grassroots," he said.
"But he seems not to be able to do this. He is not fast. That causes all the problems to pile up," Zaik told The Malaysian Insider.
Yesterday, Dr Mahathir announced he was withdrawing his support for Najib and the government, adding that the PM was performing worse than his predecessor, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
“I have tried to give my views to him directly, which are also the views of many people who have met me,” Dr Mahathir said in his popular blog, chedet.cc.
“I have no choice but to withdraw my support. This has not been effective so I have to criticise.”
Zaik said Dr Mahathir's grouses were not new, and that he himself had complained to Najib over the government's plodding pace.
He said Putrajaya’s lack of urgency had allowed groups to sprout up and question the Federal Constitution and flout the law.
"When it drags on and provocation is not being dealt with swiftly by the government, then the other side will feel unhappy and react."
Dr Mahathir said yesterday that Najib’s slide began when he started to listen to his “enemies’ demands” and abolished the Internal Security Act in 2011 and the Restrictive Residents Act, which allowed the government to detain anyone including suspected criminals without trial.
“These actions did not reduce opposition from the other side. Instead, crime increased because many gang leaders were released,” said the former prime minister, an active proponent of the security laws.
Zaik agreed and said Najib had created a vacuum when he dismantled the acts without replacing them immediately with similar ones.
"He created the space for all sorts of people to take advantage of the situation, without having to face any repercussion. So those who challenge the constitution will go unpunished.
"I never had any problems with the laws, only those who carried it out. These laws tend to be used for political purposes. Those who demand to be freed are not even good people."
The Malaysian Insider reported that Malaysian morning dailies were silent today over Dr Mahathir's attacks against Najib and his administration although several of those linked with the former prime minister had said this was festering for months.
Most pro-Umno bloggers were also quiet, with only Syed Akbar Ali discussing Dr Mahathir’s withdrawal of support for Najib.
The lack of mainstream media coverage suggests that editors have deliberately muffled any criticism against the current prime minister.
