By-election best bet to defuse Selangor crisis BUT Khalid wants to cling on, Umno fears snap polls

By-election best bet to defuse S'gor crisis BUT Khalid wants to cling on, Umno fears snap polls
Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid's move to terminate six executive councillors from the PKR and DAP is fast, tough and unexpected, worsening the split of Selangor politics. It has led to a question: whether the Selangor Pakatan Rakyat state government still exists.
Khalid had received the Sultan's consent to stay in the office as the Menteri Besar while Umno had expressed its support to Khalid, consolidating his determination to take the risk. After the termination of the six exco members, the Selangor state government will be led by Khalid and exco members from PAS.
The central committee meeting of PAS scheduled on Aug 17 will then become the key determining the overall situation. It might save Pakatan Rakyat from disintegration, or become the last straw collapsing the coalition.
Paradoxically, PAS that seems to have been controlling the overall situation consists of liberal and consecutive factions and it is still a question whether the two factions are having a consistent stand on the Menteri Besar issue. If PAS is facing a split itself, it might cause harm to itself in its attempt of hurting others.
It is indeed not an impossible variable.
The same situation might happen in the PKR, too. Would some PKR members follow Khalid to consolidate his post as the Menteri Besar and make the state be ruled by the PAS-Umno "unity government"? It is another intriguing question.
The Menteri Besar crisis in Selangor was originally a party infighting but it has now evolved into a political storm that could affect the whole political situation in the country. The DAP, PAS and Umno have been involved in the whirlpool involuntarily, with a motive or maliciously. Enemies have become friends; while friends have turned into enemies. The struggle has brought chaos while policies have turned idle. As a result, the people have become victims of the crisis and democracy has been seriously hurt.
If there is only opportunism in politics; if there is only partisanship in politics; if there is only stand but no right and wrong in politics; if only personal and party interests are left in politics; if politics pursues only power struggle and not democracy progress, it will then be a collective destruction. In addition to sighing in frustration, what else can the people do?
In fact, it is not impossible to find an icebreaking way for the current political impasse in Selangor. Regardless of Khalid or PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, or PAS, the PKR or Umno, as long as one of them is willing to let go, the farce could be ended. When everyone is claiming that they are fighting for justice, when everyone is combative, when someone is willing to fight while some others are willing to endure the pain, would there still be room for the survival of rational and legitimate governance as the people expected?
The political farce has evolved to the point where people are feeling sick of it. The most democratic solution is to dissolve the state assembly and hold a state by-election. Although it is the most painful and costly move, it is the last resort. - Mysinchew
