4,000 DBKL staff do not own homes

While the DBKL is building low-cost homes for the poor in the city, about 4,000 of its workers do not have a place to call their own.
DBKLKUALA LUMPUR: About 4,000 out of the 10,000 Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) workers still do not own a home and the local authority is making every effort to solve the problem, Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Mansor said today.
Adnan said this at the DBKL Training Institute in Bandar Tun Razak where he gave offer letters to 212 staff to buy low-cost houses in the Pinggiran Bukit Jalil II public housing scheme.
“According to a DBKL census, 4,041 workers still do not own homes, despite working with the local authority for many years and we are working to solve this problem,” he said.
Adnan said two programmes has been launched to benefit the DBKL employees who do not own homes.
Under the first programme launched on Aug 15, 121 DBKL staff were given offer letters to buy low-cost houses in Batu 2 ½ Jalan Cheras.
“Today’s event is the second programme for 212 staff earning less than RM2,500 per month.
Adnan said the government was planning to provide an urban allowance of RM500 to DBKL staff earning below RM2,500.
“It has been proposed that employees earning less get more allowance while those earning more receive less,” he said.
Adnan also said the government would provide space for soup kitchens to operate.
“The Datuk Bandar is buying a place to build a temporary shelter for the homeless. We will allow non-governmental organisations to operate there,” he said.
