UK tells citizens to stay off east Sabah islands

The UK government has issued an advisory against all but essential travel to islands off the Sabah east coast due to a “general threat from terrorism”.

The advisory issued on its foreign office website yesterday says that this follows the killing of one police officer and kidnapping of another off Pulau Mabul on July 12.

“The Foreign and Commonwealth Office advise against all but essential travel to all islands off the coast of eastern Sabah from Kudah to Tawau, including (but not limited to) Lankayan, Mabul, Pom Pom, Kapalai, Litigan, Sipadan and Mataking.

“There is a general threat from terrorism. Attacks could be discriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travelers.

“There is a threat to foreigners of kidnapping and criminality on the eastern coast of Sabah and in particular the islands close to the Sulu Archipelago in the southern Philippines,” the advisory reads.

It also cited the abduction of two women from Singamata Islandon April 2 and attack on murder and kidnapping of Taiwanese tourists at Pulau Pom Pom last November.

It also advises “great care” when traveling to the east coast town of Sandakan, the coast south of Tawau, Lahad Datu and Semporna.

The advisory comes as police confirm that Constable Zakia Aliep, abducted following the Pulau Mabul shootout, is alive and had contacted his wife. However, his location is still unknown.

His colleague Corporal Rajah Jamuan, 32, was shot dead by Zakia’s abductors in the incident that happened at 11.10pm  at Mabul Water Bungalows Resort.
