Residents decry fencing of railway reserve

A group of disgruntled residents in Taman Kepong complained to Kepong MP Tan Seng Giaw at the Railway Assets Corporation’s (PAK) decision to fence up its reserve land behind the back lane of their houses.

The reserve land was said to have been long occupied by the residents for various purposes such as for gardening and parking, but was recently fenced to refrain them from using it.

“The residents used to park their vehicles here, but now the lane is narrowed by the fence and they have nowhere to park their cars,” said V Sivaram(above), Taman Kepong Resident Association chairperson during a site visit this morning.

Fenced up, the reserved land will covered by undergrowth and be a breeding ground for snakes and mosquitoes, he said.

Stressing on the increasing dengue cases in the area, he said: “We would not mind (that it is fenced up) if it is clean but it is not, the 285 households in this area will be affected.”

Snakes in the house

Another resident Son Kim Huat added that there have been several incidents where snakes entered the houses, causing serious concern.

“The land used to bring a lot of conveniences to the residents but now it is abandoned,” he said.

Echoing the residents, Tan, who was also at the site visit said there is no point fencing up the area if it is not used.

“PAK should review the whole situation, now that people have made explanation, they should manage the land properly and efficiently,” he said.

When contacted, PAK said that it is authorised fence off the residential area from railway track for safety reasons.

PAK is a statutory body set up to administer railway assets, following the corporatisation of Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd.
