National unity minister biased, says Isma

Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) said today it snubbed Minister in Prime Minister's Department Joseph Kurup's invitation to break fast together with National Unity Consultation Council (NUCC) as the minister had strayed from his duty.

Isma's president Abdullah Zaik Abdul Rahman charged that Kurup, the minister in charge of national unity, was unprofessional and had a bias towards NUCC's National Harmony and Reconciliation Bill - something which Isma wants to see dropped.

“We are disappointed with the attitude of leaders like Kurup. He does not come across as someone who puts the national interest first.  He is a unprofessional minister and has ignored lawful process," Abdullah Zaik was reporting as saying on Isma's website.

He added Kurup had acted questionably in backing the NUCC, which had proposed the Harmony Bill. All bills should only come from the attorney-general's office, he said.

Abdullah Zaik (right) also wondered if Kurup was in cohorts with NUCC, to sneak an illegal bill into the cabinet.

"This is why from the start, Isma will not recognise the NUCC because we see that they have overstepped their roles," he said.

Besides Isma, Perkasa, another Malay rights NGO, was also invited to the Ramadan event but also didn't turn up on Sunday night.

Kurup however told reporters then that he did not feel slighted. He said he will "make it up" with his friend, Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali.

In his speech, the minister who directly oversees NUCC, affirmed that he and the council would not back down from their objective to unite Malaysian people.

Kurup however stopped short of saying that the Harmony Bill was ready to be tabled in Parliament.
