Ministry has no hand in The Economist delay

The latest edition of international current affairs magazine The Economist was held back on the publisher's own initiative, and not on directive of the government, a Home Ministry officer said today.

The ministry’s Publication and Quranic Texts Control Division secretary Hashimah Nik Jaafar told Malaysiakinithat she is also unaware of what “sensitive content” that the magazine contained that led to the delay.

“I don’t know why The Economist have been delayed. It could be their moral obligation, because they respect our multiracial society.

“So you’d have to check with them again. It did not come from us,” she said when contacted today.

Malaysiakini had contacted The Economist yesterday but have yet to receive a reply.

In an email to Malaysian subscribers, the magazine had said that the distribution of its July 5 edition is delayed "due to sensitive content".
