DAP urges Najib to show leadership by releasing report on Sabah illegals

The DAP has called on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to portray leadership by making public the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on illegal immigrants in Sabah, which was submitted to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong two months ago.
The party's adviser Lim Kit Siang (pic) said the move would regain the confidence of Sabahans in Putrajaya as the long-time problem of illegal immigrants was the root cause of the law-and-order crisis in the state.
"What leadership is Najib showing when he refuses to make public the report of RCI in Sabah although it has been presented to Putrajaya for close to two months after decades of foot-dragging on the issue?" he said in a statement.
"But once GE13 was over, with the Najib premiership firmly ensconced in Putrajaya, although on a minority vote, the decades-old problem of the illegal immigrant problems in Sabah are also banished from the consciousness of Putrajaya," he added.
"This is why Najib's recent announcement of the restructuring of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) does not inspire much public confidence.
"That the government is serious in giving priority to ensure security in Sabah… to stamp out the problem of illegal immigrants in Sabah – which is the root cause of the security and law-and-order crisis in Sabah."
He said although the PM cited Brazil's 1-7 defeat to Germany in the World Cup to show lack of leadership, he himself had shown a similar trait for the past year.
"Najib is one of the heads of government in the world who has a lot to learn from Brazil's massacre by Germany. For in the past year, Najib has shown a singular lack of leadership as the Prime Minister of Malaysia.
"In fact, Najib will lose all credibility as leader and prime minister, particularly in Sabah, if he continues to lock up the RCI report in the vaults in Putrajaya, although he was the first PM to accede to the demands of Sabahans for a RCI on the issue," he added.
Earlier this week, Sabah opposition leaders also called on Putrajaya to release the findings of the RCI, saying the restructuring of the Esscomm was not enough without a solution to the problem of illegal immigrants in the state.
The Commission which was set up on September 21, 2012, called 211 witnesses in the proceedings which ended on September 20 last year.
Among the notable witnesses were former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and former Chief Ministers of Sabah, including Datuk Harris Salleh and Datuk Seri Joseph Pairin Kitingan.
Najib announced on June 1, 2012, that Putrajaya had agreed to set up the RCI to investigate problems related to illegal immigrants in Sabah, including the issuance of Malaysian documents to Muslim illegal immigrants under a scheme known as Project IC.
