UPKO only considered quitting BN, says Dompok

PENAMPANG, Nov 4 — United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (UPKO) president Tan Sri Bernard Dompok has denied claims by former UPKO deputy president Datuk Seri Wilfred Bumburing that the party was on the verge of leaving the Barisan Nasional (BN).
He confirmed that UPKO’s supreme council had discussed the matter but the party decided to stay put in BN.
“There were people who wanted to talk about these things, so we put it to the Supreme Council, (and) the supreme council deliberated.
“The majority voice was for us to go along with the BN, because of what the BN has been doing, in as far as the RCI (Royal Commission of Inquiry on illegal immigrants in Sabah) and all those things.
“So, I can confirm that it was discussed but the party decided not to go along those lines,” he told reporters after opening the Penampang UPKO convention here today.
Dompok, who is also plantation industries and commodities minister, was asked to comment on the statement by Bumburing (picture) yesterday, asserting earlier claims by former party vice-president Datuk Maijol Mahap that UPKO leaders had decided to quit BN and join Pakatan Rakyat, prior to their departure from the party, and pledged support for opposition Pakatan.
Maijol was recently quoted as saying the exit did not happen because Prime Minister and BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Razak promised to make the announcement on the setting up of the RCI on the illegal immigrant issue and extraordinary increase in Sabah population.
In brushing aside the claims, Dompok said: “They are telling lies or they are not being accurate in their statements to the media.
“We are here to see that everyone in Malaysia shares the same things and that no one is left behind. We, as a party, will strive for this.” — Bernama
