Single moms sue Selangor govt

They want RM10.9 million in allowances as promised by Pakatan Rakyat in the 2008 election manifesto.
SHAH ALAM: Some 2,000 singles mothers today filed a suit against the Selangor government demanding that it pay them a total of RM10.9 million in allowances due to them as promised by the opposition pact in its 2008 election manifesto.
The women, led by Selangor Single Mothers Association chairman Murtini Kasman Saman, filed the suit through the law firm of Tetuan Kamarudin & Partners at the High Court registry here.
They named the Selangor government (PKR, PAS and DAP) as the first defendant and Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, who is the chief executive of the state, as the second defendant.
The claimed that the pact, after coming into power in the state following the 2008 general election, kept its promise of coming up with a free water scheme and a RM1,000 reward to each Selangor student who gained admission to university but reneged on the promise of giving allowances to single mothers in the state.
As such, they are demanding that the 2020 plaintiffs be paid single mothers allowance of RM100 a month for 54 months (from April 1, 2008 till Oct 30, 2012), which works out to RM10.9 million, and are also seeking costs and other relief deemed fit by the court.
Their lawyer, Kamarudin Ahmad, said his firm would also be filing similar suits next month for 5,000 more single mothers in Selangor.
