'Pro-Malaysia' NGOs seek French probe into Suaram

Several “pro-Malaysia” NGOs have submitted a joint memorandum to the French embassy in Kuala Lumpur, urging France to investigate human rights group Suaram.

The group, comprising the Young Journalists Club Malaysia (KWMM), Muslim Consumers Association  Malaysia (PPIM), Malay Consultative Council, Perkasa, Crime Prevention Awareness Board and the Malaysian Consumerism Protection Board, handed over the four-page memorandum this afternoon.

NONEKWMM president Dzulkarnain Taib(left) said the French authorities should probe the background of Suaram as it is “an illegal organisation”.

He also urged France to find out how Suaram ‘manipulated its legal system’ to obtain the status as plaintiff in the ongoing inquiry into the sale of Scorpene-class submarines to Malaysia.
According to Dzulkarnain, they believed that Suaram has no locus standi when acting as the plaintiff and it would be a national threat to Malaysia if the French court gave them access to confidential documents as thick as 153 pages.

“We want the French government to investigate if Suaram is cheating the French court as well as to follow up on preventing any individual under Suaram from entering France,” he said.

Unlike Suaram, Dzulkarnain stressed, KWMM and six other NGOs that have submitted the memorandum are registered organisations with the Malaysian government.

“We are pro-Malaysia, we support the government’s efforts and give constructive criticisms for the benefit of Malaysians,” he said.

First secretary of the French embassy Damien Syed, when contacted, confirmed that a memorandum was received from a group of individuals in the afternoon.

He said the memorandum will be forwarded to the French ambassador for further action.

He however refused to comment because he has no authority to do so.
