Nong Chik: Nurul Izzah angling for votes

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 11 — Nurul Izzah Anwar’s controversial statement supporting religious freedom in a forum in Subang Jaya, Selangor recently was meant to fish for votes and proved her insincerity in serving the people.
Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin (picture) said Nurul Izzah’s statement at the forum on “Islamic State: Which version; Who’s responsibility?” was just to satisfy participants.
“Nurul Izzah was willing to support religious freedom but on realising that it caused anger and raised objection from various parties, she blamed the media,” he told reporters after opening Lembah Pantai “Karnival 1Malaysia For Youth (1M4U) 2012” here today.
A pro-opposition news portal report on November 3 quoted Nurul Izzah as saying that the people should not be compelled to adopt a particular religion, and that this should also apply to the Malays.
“When you ask me, there is no compulsion in religion ... how can anyone say sorry, this (religious freedom) is only applicable to non-Malays, it has to apply equally,” said the vice-president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).
Nong Chik said Barisan Nasional (BN) has always fulfilled its promises to the people unlike the opposition which always hold rallies and made empty promises.
Asked about 13th general election, he believed it would be held after Chinese New Year next year but final decision rest with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
“It is just my prediction. The BN election machinery must always be ready to mobilise campaign work in every area,” said Nong Chik who is also Lembah Pantai Umno division chief. — Bernama
