Dr M: Only Najib is active on general election

Although the general election is to be called in the next six months, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad says Umno divisions are not active on the ground because they are still waiting to know whether their preferred candidates will be fielded.

"I found that only (Umno president and Prime Minister) Najib (Abdul Razak) is active. At the divisional level, they are still waiting to see who will become candidates before they want to act.

"This kind of attitude, if widespread, might cause us to lose. Actually they should be active by now.

"Regardless of who will be the candidates, we should win the election," Mahathir is quoted in an interview published today in Umno-owned Malay daily Utusan Malaysia, in a prelude to tomorrow's Umno annual general meeting

He was asked whether the largest party in the ruling coalition was prepared to face the general election.

Umno's problem, Mahathir said, was that its members only wanted their preferred candidates to be fielded or else they would not give their support.
'Youth wing's performance not satisfying'
Asked whether the party's wings have undergone changes in terms of their roles in the party, the Umno veteran commented that the Youth wing's performance was still not satisfying.

"Not satisfied yet. Seems like the Youth wing is not that active. Sometimes there are meetings at divisional level that I notice the Youth wing did not take part. Usually the Wanita wing is more vibrant, as well as the Puteri wing."

Mahathir also declared his support for Najib to win the general election, saying he would campaign for the party if allowed by Najib.

"This is the time for me to repay because through this party, I was able to win and later elected as president and then prime minister. It is time for me to repay the kindness of the party," he said.

He predicted that BN would win back Kedah and Selangor, or even Penang and Kelantan as well.

"However it all depends on Umno itself," he said, adding that internal sabotage was the main factor that would cause Umno's defeat.
